    Academic Affairs

  • The office of Academic Affair is focusing on the matter of student teaching and learning activities.

Student clinical placement is also under the purview of Academic Affair but this portfolio has been delegated to the Clinical Coordinator and closely monitored by this office. Since the Kulliyyah has not yet developed any department therefore this office is managing the entire courses offered in both semesters, except for some of the Basic Medical sciences components that the Kulliyyah is still required the service from Kulliyyah of Allied Health Sciences. Some problem arises during semester three when students will be required to so their clinical placements.

In order to smoothes the process of teaching and learning activities each course will be assigned to a coordinator to plan the process of teaching and learning activities throughout the semester. The high stakes examinations take place in every semester one and two but for semester three only re-sit papers and allowed.

The routine activities of this office are as follows:

    1. To prepare an independent academic calendar for Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) programme and to obtain approval from the senate.
    2. To prepare weekly timetable.
    3. To monitor teaching and learning activities.
    4. To assist students in registration of courses for each semester
    5. To assist students in registration of university and Kulliyyah required courses.
    6. To appoint committee for the vetting and editing of questions and act as examination secretariat to approve the questions.
    7. To appoint guest lecturers for teaching and learning activities.
    8. To assist academic staff to plan their teaching activities.
    9. To assist students in registration with Nursing Board of Malaysia and Licensure Examination.
    10. To recommend external examiners to the Kulliyyah Board Meeting.
    11. To revise course outline from time to time and to obtain approval from the senate if revision is required.
    12. To plan for continues curriculum review every four to five years.

The year of 2008 was a remarkable year, as it was the first time the Kulliyyah reviewed the existing curriculum.  The review process began from the comments given by the accreditation body of Public Service Department, the external examiner and also from a survey finding involving the graduating batch on that year as well as the third year students. T his is because the Kulliyyah believed these categories of students could provide more accurate information regarding their experience as student nurses in this Kulliyyah.

The report from this survey and the comments from the courses were taken into consideration and the new course outlines were tabled to the senate standing committee in the academic year of 2008/2009. Finally the new course outlines were approved by the senate and took effect in 2008/2009 batch of students onwards. Beside that the, Academic office has also updated all the credit hours to the student learning time (SLT) as required by Malaysia Quality Assurance Agency (MQA) in each of the courses offered.

For the upcoming year which is the academic year for 2010/2011, the office of Academic Affair will plan for continuous reviewed revision on the curriculum especially research components and specialized nursing courses. The changes required on those courses are mainly on the content of current diseases involved in specialty areas and also to increase the load of learning time. For the research component it will be increased on the credit hours as the current credit hours does not suit with the load carried by the students.

The office will also plan to create the first department which is the Department of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) in the coming academic year. This is because the academic staff who are trained in this field have completed their Master and PhD. InsyaAllah, by that time the Kulliyyah will run all the subjects of medical sciences independently. The existence of BMS department will result in, more research activities taking place, as well as offering relevant short courses to nurses out side to intensify their knowledge in medical sciences.
