Majority of the nursing students from 2004 to 2009 were recruited from IIUM Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) which is a two-year matriculation program. The increasing number of CSF students joining nursing in IIUM showing that the community had become more aware that nursing is a profession that requires a university level of education even in its basic training as shown in the table below.

Applicants possessing professional diploma qualification of registered nurse (RN) from local institution, or those recognized by Nursing Board of Malaysia could enter the Bachelor in Nursing Program into the second year of the program.

In 2008, one diploma RN from UiTM was admitted followed by two male registered nurses from Saudi Arabia in 2009. All three were given exemptions to the level-one nursing and related required modules. All university required courses and level two to four modules are compulsory and not exempted.

The nursing students with the help of the Student Development Unit, Kuantan Campus and the Nursing Lecturers formed the Nursing Student Association (NSA) in 2004; and in 2006, the nursing student organization was renamed as Nursing Student Society (NurSS) registered under the Registrar of Society of Malaysia.

The Nursing Student Society had been rather active in community services especially as the number of nursing students increased. The activities of nursing students increased remarkably and was also highlighted in the First National Student Symposium held in March 2009, and teaching the public to make reusable masks in the prevention of control of spread of H1N1 & Influenza Like Illness during the pandemic. This is in line with the University’s 2009 theme on Environmental Protection and Conservation.
